Tales From A Small Town Sheriff by Raymond Cook is a 202-page story that chronicles the life of John Tucker as the sheriff of Marble, Colorado in 1897. John lived by his wit’s not just by the speed of his gun hand. The population of Marble in 1897 was around 400 people with close to 30 businesses. The town was boxed in on both sides with tall mountains, so the town only had a main street.
At one edge of town was a large clearing where wagon trains or cattle herds could bed down for the night. The other end of town ended at the bottom of Schofield Pass. The ‘Homestead Act of 1862’ was the match that lit millions of Americans dreams back east of wanting to own their own land out west. Each married couple was eligible to own 160 acres of land out west if they lived on the land, built a home and farmed it for five years.
Small towns sprouted up near the mines and saloons, and cathouses were open day and night. In those early days, it was truly a Wild West era. Few towns early on had any sheriff. Gunfights out in the street or during a card game were common. Lawmen in towns big and small were called either sheriffs or town marshals. Their job was the same, to maintain law and order.
Some men stepped forward to take the job because of the pay and status. However, they soon realized that without being fast with a gun they didn’t live long. Not only did they have to face gunfighters who rode into town but drunks in a saloon as well. Some town sheriffs were on the payroll of corrupted men of wealth who used the sheriff’s badge to their advantage. The typical wage for a town sheriff was $150 a month and room and board. Take a trip back in time and follow the life of a small town sheriff.
5 star comment. Samuel Mejorado October 15, 2015. Great Book!!! I love the old Frontier era and really enjoyed this book. It reminded me of the TV show Gunsmoke with Matt Dillon as the marshall. This book showed me the job of a lawman wasn’t as easy as portrayed on TV. No wonder the ranches and folks of Marble appreciated Sheriff Tucker so much. This is really a good read. It can be enjoyed by all ages.
